Central Government Should Speed up the Expansion of Kangra Airport: Chief Minister

 Heliport Construction Process in Tribal Areas Should Also be Expedited

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Shri Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu met Union Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya M. Scindia in Delhi today. He discussed the proposed expansion of the runway at Kangra Airport from 1376 meters to 3010 meters for operation of A320 aircraft. He urged for construction of the airport by the Airports Authority of India (AAI), for which the state government will complete the land acquisition process.

Speed Up the Construction Process of 9 Heliports

The Chief Minister said that the state government is trying to build heliports in the district headquarters and tribal areas. For which he also urged the Union Minister to speed up the construction process of 9 heliports proposed in the first phase. He said that the heliport is essential in promoting tourism in tribal and remote areas, emergency medical services and evacuation of local people and tourists in case they get stuck in snowy areas.

Additional Flights Started for the Convenience of Tourists

The Chief Minister also talked about the operation of Sanjauli Heliport in Shimla. Along with this, he also urged to start additional flights from Chandigarh to Kullu for the convenience of tourists. Mr Sukhu said that currently three flights to Shimla, four to Dharamshala and only one to Kullu were being operated, which was not enough considering the large number of tourists visiting the area.

Heliports Will be Constructed Under UDAN Scheme: Central Minister

Giving information, Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said that under the UDAN scheme, heliports are being considered to be built in Rakkar, Palampur, Chamba and Reckong Peo. Construction of other heliports will also be considered in the next phase. Apart from this, he also directed the officials of the ministry to speed up the process of operating Sanjauli Heliport.
